##title##
As a movement, modern scholars trace the origin of the British Israelism to the 1860-1870's. There were predecessors of the theory before it became established as a movement.

The idea that the British descend from the ten lost tribes of Israel is traceable to various fragments of works from the Early Modern Period (c. 1500 - 1800) although adherents of British Israelism claim earlier sources exist, such as ancient or medieval manuscripts, these are however disputed. The earliest predecessor advocates of British Israelism included M. le Loyer, an early 16th century French magistrate of Huguenot ancestry, Adriaan van der Schrieck, a Flemish language researcher (d. 1621), Vincenzo Galilei, the English antiquarian Henry Spelman, Jakob Abbadie and John Sadler. Some modern scholars have proposed that British Israelism grew out of earlier schools of thought, namely various "Phoenicianism" or "Orientalism" schools which were popular from the 18th century. The scholar and archaeologist R. A. Stewart Macalister has pointed out that it was "very popular" for earlier writers to subscribe to a Middle-Eastern or Central-Asian genealogy for the peoples of Ireland or Britain (e.g. Hebrew, Phoenician or Scythian). Charles Vallancey for example as early as 1772 published a work attempting to prove that the Irish language was Phoenician, while John Pinkerton's A Dissertation on the Origin and Progress of the Scythians or Goths (1787) attempted to show that the Scots were Scythians who had originated in Central Asia. The historian Sharon Turner later used Pinkerton's research and identified the Saxons as being Scythian. Other works published such as Eastern Origin of Celtic Nations by James Cowles Prichard attempted to prove a far eastern origin for the Celts. In Ireland there also developed a popular school of "Phoenicianism", where some historians such as JoaquĆn Lorenzo Villanueva (1837) attempted to link the Irish ancestrally to an ancient Phoenician settlement. Early British Israelites relied on such literature for historical evidence, but as also a religious theory used the Bible as support.
